EU probes Apple over blocking web apps to avoid App Store fees
The European Union is investigating Apple’s decision to disable “progressive web apps” (PWAs) in the European Union. This move comes amid increasing scrutiny of Apple’s business practices, particularly its App Store dominance and the 30% commission it charges for in-app purchases.
Apple claims disabling PWAs is necessary to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) and protect user security and privacy. However, critics argue this also eliminates a way for developers to bypass App Store fees, potentially raising concerns about competition and user choice.
The EU probe could lead to hefty fines for Apple if the company is found to be non-compliant with the DMA. Apple faces additional pressure from the EU, including a potential €500 million fine for alleged anti-competitive practices related to its music streaming service.
The investigation highlights the EU’s growing efforts to regulate Big Tech companies and ensure a level playing field for all players in the digital marketplace.
